Brief Artist Statement

My work explores the interrelationship of literature and design through a lens of interactivity. I consider text as a material object and poetry — its individual words — as a collection of film frames building into one clear moving image. The language of my work is inherently histrionic with rumors of camp and pseudo-intellectuality that, through the guise of the inner monologue, utilizes film theory, particularly the Klushove Effect, to temper and manipulate emotional outcomes. Within this program, I follow Andrei Tarkovsky’s insight that editing is “sculpting in time” — that, like cinema, writing is the distortion of time given rhythmic value. Additionally, I view alliteration as a form of melodrama, assonance as tension, and the page — whether digital or physical — as a performance venue rife with interactive opportunity.
